vltra violet is an independent multidisciplinary artist whose world spans electro alt-pop, DJing, production, and performance. built in LA, currently incubating in Nashville. the sound pulls from drum and bass, hyperpop/hyperpunk, rock, and techno. the visual world splits between the spacey ethereal, the dark shadow, and glitchy internet. always evolving to reflect the state of the inner world.
how would you describe your work to someone encountering it for the first time?
I consider myself a jack of all trades / multidisciplinary by nature, so the music is only one channel within the world of Vltra Violet. My sound is very inspired by Drum and Bass, Hyperpop/Hyperpunk, Rock, Techno and my visual world is divided between the spacey ethereal, the dark shadow, and glitchy internet themes. I’m always evolving and innovating to reflect the state of my inner world.
where are you based, and how does that city influence your work?
While I’m normally based in LA, I’ve been doing a stint in Nashville deep in artist development. Every city I visit leaves a mark but LA and NYC have been the strongest influences on me prior to coming to Nash. In Nashville, it’s been the people and the collaborations. There is so much talent here and everyone just wants to help each other out and see each other succeed.
what are you currently working on?
July 11 I’ll be debuting in Nashville for The Spin Lab final showcase. After that, I’ll be finishing up my soon-to-be-announced debut EP called Bleeding Heart(s). The central themes of the project are sacrifice, longing, and transformation. It traces the emotional stages of grief you move through when you lose not just a person but a version of yourself. Vulnerability runs through every track, my literal bleeding heart laid out for all to see. The hope is that listeners hear something familiar in it, and that it becomes as much of a healing experience for them as making it was for me.
describe a pivotal moment in your creative career.
Starting with my origin story of 2021… This is when my life came apart all at once. I was guided away from my relationship, my career, and the identity I had spent years building. Vltra Violet was born out of Divine Intervention. It showed me the truth about this world, the truth about my being and purpose, and completely rearranged my life to align with this purpose. It all sounds very dramatic, and to be honest, it was. However the core of it is that music is one of the most powerful tools for healing.
Then it was the first time I ever produced a song a year later in 2022. I sent it to my friend T.Saw and he loved the beat + wrote some rap lyrics over it which I loved and was inspired to make another beat and so on and so forth. He’s also the person who taught me how to DJ. Really the first person who believed in me and encouraged me to pursue music.
Then it was the first time we went to the studio to work on some of our collabs and the engineer was shocked I had produced the tracks on BandLab on my phone 😂 He was the first stranger to tell me to pursue an artist career.
So many little moments and interactions that have kept me going. Coming to Nashville and getting plugged in with H.O.M.E. (Helping Our Music Evolve), then doing Spin Lab, etc. Grateful for it all.
pro-tip for someone starting out?
You just have to block out all the noise and go inward. I’m able to build emotionally complex worlds because they are built on my real experiences and big feelings. I don’t care about trends or what other people are doing. I can be inspired by someone but I’m never trying to replicate what someone else is doing.
is your current medium where you began?
Speaking of pivotal moments, getting hired at Superchief Gallery was a huge era for me. I knew beforehand that I wanted to tap more into my own artistry, and SC was always encouraging staff to submit to shows. So I was actually selling NFT digital art before I was releasing music! Sold around $5K of work - an AI generative collection called Distant Views (back when AI art was still innovative) and some digital collage work called Looking Up.
Then my first beats I produced were actually hip hop beats which became the songs I did with T.Saw. But as I was learning production, I was creating these really spacey, ethereal sounds that I tucked away for myself. This is when Vltra Violet began to incubate in my mind.
who is the most influential person for your creative career?
I think the most influential person for my sound right now is an amazing artist/producer here in Nashville named Izzy Rage.
He’s truly one of the most talented people I know, like the stuff he makes is nuts and he can make 10 incredible, ground-breaking beats in a matter of days. We’ve been working together this year and he’s already helped push my sound in the direction I want to go and knows how to get a performance out of me in the booth.
do you embrace or reject technology?
I very much embrace technology. I’ve always considered myself a futurist and have always been drawn to utopia/dystopian themes and media.
Before I worked in art and music I worked in cutting edge tech. And even in the art and music space, I’ve always been at the forefront of innovation.
I could go on and on about some of these hot topics but I acknowledge that what works for me is for me and everyone doesn’t have to see things the way that I do. I really thought people would have moved on from the AI outrage by now but as we’ve seen, it’s just become more and more divisive. So I’ll keep doing what works for me and allow others to do the same!
where do you see the role of creativity in society over the next 10 years?
We’ve recently entered a new age renaissance, so creativity will have a real chance to flourish once again. People are tired of the bland, cookie-cutter, cost-saving boringness that we’ve been receiving in this capitalist hellscape and are fighting back against the mould.
That’s why authenticity and building your art off of your individual experiences and perspective are the way to thrive.
